Obama plans small-business lending boost
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Seeking to counter a chorus of unhappy Republicans and nervous Wall Street investors, President Barack Obama and his economic team are taking a cheerier tone while making billions in federal loans available to the nation's struggling small businesses.
Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday planned to announce a broad package that includes reduced small-business lending fees and an increase on the guarantee to some Small Business Administration loans. A day earlier, the president's advisers said in television interviews that they remained confident in the nation's economic fundamentals, at times adopting upbeat rhetoric the president once mocked.
"The fundamentals are sound in the sense that the American workers are sound, we have a good capital stock, we have good technology," said Christina Romer, who heads the White House Council of Economic Advisers.
Obama, for his part, has embraced the role of "confidence-builder in chief," as one business leader asked him to become. One week after his budget director declared "fundamentally, the economy is weak," Obama's economic advisers offered up a buoyant assessment.
Larry Summers, the director of the National Economic Council and an Obama adviser, quoted the president: "It's never as good as people say it is when they say it's good and it's never as bad as people say it is when they say it's bad."
Dealing with a severe recession, Obama has turned to a public face that emphasizes the potential for recovery instead of its limits.
To that end, the government plans to take aggressive steps to boost bank liquidity with more than $10 billion aimed at unfreezing the secondary credit market, according to officials briefed on the plan who demanded anonymity to avoid pre-empting the president's announcement.
Administration officials confirmed they would unveil details Monday.
"We know that small businesses are the engine of growth in the economy, and we absolutely want to do things to help them," Romer said Sunday morning, speaking broadly on the outline of the plan. "There are already a lot of things to help them in the recovery package, and some of what will be coming out are the things that were in the recovery package: increasing the SBA loan guarantees, lowering fees."
The move comes as Republicans have sought to build on some bipartisan misgivings over Obama's ambitious spending blueprint. In particular, Republicans say Obama's budget proposal to raise taxes, starting in 2011, on individuals earning more than $200,000 and on households earning more than $250,000 will hurt small businesses, which face higher dividend taxes and limits on itemized deductions.
"We've got to do something to help these small-business people. We know that they're the job creators in this economy," the House Republicans' No. 2 official, Rep. Eric Cantor, said Sunday. "And the problem ... I think we're seeing out of the Obama administration is a lack of focus on how to get things going again."
The new measures taking effect Monday focus on opening up small-business lending, seen as critical to cities' growth. While the SBA typically guarantees $20 billion in loans annually, new lending this year is on track to fall below $10 billion, according to the administration.
Under the two-month-old administration's new initiative, the government will step in to buy these loans to help unlock the frozen credit market, using money from the recently passed bailout package in the range of between $10 billion to $20 billion, one official briefed on the plan said.
The other measures are part of Geithner's financial stability plan announced last month. They involve temporarily eliminating upfront fees of up to 3.75 percent and some processing charges on certain SBA loans that lenders typically pass along to borrowers. It also increases the government guarantees on certain loans to 90 percent, up from 85 percent for loans below $150,000 and 75 percent for larger loans.
Summers appeared on ABC's "This Week" and on CBS's "Face the Nation." Romer and Cantor appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Explode Your Google Adsense and Affiliate Commissions Through Niche Blog Content
Content Is King"... and will remain 'King' for as long as the Internet exists and is for this very reason WHY you'd be smart to build a network of these sites for yourself to profit from for years to come.
Let me ask you this... "What do most people go online for?"
If you said "INFORMATION" - then you are absolutely right.
And besides, that IS and always will be the Internet's primary purpose and will always be one of the main reasons why people come online to search for.
So, with that said, you should now have a good idea as to why Niche Content Sites are the way to go if you are looking to build a network of sites that will produce a nice residual income for years to come and will steadily grow over time on there own all by using other peoples content and products.
Now that you have the idea, for the rest of this article I'd like to share with you my 5 TOP reasons you should seriously think about building your own network of Niche Content Sites of your own, and then at the end will reveal to you a few examples of what kinds of Niche Content Sites you can build.
Reason #1. Search Engines absolutely love them.
If you don't know by now Search Engines love content and what do Niche Content Sites contain? That's right... Content.
The more content you have to offer, the more pages you'll get listed within the search engines, which then gives you more exposure to your target audience from within the search engines and more chances for you to profit, which I'll explain in more detail in a few minutes.
Point being, this is a great way to grow your business and give your audience what they're looking for all at the same time, Plus... to get the Search Engine spiders to return for regular indexing.
Reason #2. Your Niche Content Sites will grow effortlessly.
Content is literally the FUEL that powers the net and even more so is one of the most effective ways to grow your own business online.
What I mean by that is there are literally thousands of content publishers out there on the web looking for places to submit their content for publication. So depending your niche, you will always have an abundance of content to continually grow your network of Niche Content Sites no matter who your target audience is.
I will also be giving you some examples of some Niche Content Sites towards the end of this article to give you some idea of what to expect.
Reason #3. The information is targeted towards your Niche.
Niche Content Sites are just as the name depicts and even more so the information inwhich they contain primarily target your target audience and feed their hunger for information.
Remember what I mentioned earlier about why people come online in the first place.
Your simply giving them what they ready want and making a profit from it at the same time which I'll explain in more detail in the last two segments of this article.
Reason #4. Get paid for other peoples work.
With the rising popularity of Google's Adsense program and the profits that can be made from other peoples content using Google Adsense, this gives people all the more reason to build a network of Niche Content Sites because of the residual income you can make through Google's Adsense program.
The trick is this... the more pages you have listed, the more opportunity you have to generate BIG Google Adsense cheques, all from someone else's work.
Pretty COOL!
Reason #5. Get paid through targeted affiliate programs.
Want to get paid between 30 - 70% again by offering targeted affiliate programs about the content within your Niche Content Sites?
That's right, get paid for referring other peoples products that directly reflect the content inwhich your Niche Content site offers and what your target audience is looking for.
By having a Niche Content Site with targeted content, this gives you a great opportunity to help Pre-Sell your target audience to want to get more information, Information inwhich they have to 'Pay For' which is where the targeted affiliate program you choose comes into play.
Now... are those 5 reasons enough for you to get started with your own network of Niche Content Sites?
Only you can answer that question.
It's reason enough for me, and the real cool thing is you don't have to produce any of the content yourself and you can use other peoples products to make a profit, Plus... Google Adsense.
Just imagine what a network of 30 to 50 of these sites would bring in.
I could ramble on but I think you get the picture.
Before I go though I said I would give you a few examples of what a Niche Content Site might be so here are the two I would get started with - Article Directory or a Niche Blog.
Article Directories will target Multiple Niches where as Niche Blogs will only target One.
So, you have a choice. Now, all you have to do is make a decision.

You place vertical and horizontal adblocks on your site with your Google's AdSense affiliate code embedded, and when a visitor clicks on that ad link, you earn a commission. like as www.yourgoogleincome.com. Earning Money With Affiliate Programs and Google Explained
by Rod Beckwith and Jeff Alderson
Starting a business has never been cheaper, quicker, or easier you dont even need your own product
Because with the search engine Google and a commission for every sale of somebody elses product you generate, you can get your first sale for under 30 in mere hours worth of work.
Compare this to other businesses that take months of intense work to startup and thousands of dollars in investment.
Let me explain how it works:
The search engine Google has millions of searches taking place at every moment. Each one is by a searcher looking for information or a solution to a problem that is troubling him or her.
For example, thousands upon thousands of people search on Google each day for a way to train their dogs, typing in terms such as, How to train dog or Dog training tips.
With Google Adwords advertising program, you can make your ad showup when somebody types in these terms and you dont even need your own product. There are thousands of retailers that offer you up to 70 commission for every product you sell.
Most notably, http://www.ClickBank.com has thousands of hot products you can sell for 4070 commissions.
All you have to do to make a quick commission is pick a product from the Clickbank database, setup a Google Adwords campaign and watch the sales flowin
Of course, to get the most out of it, it is best to setup your own website and presell the customer as to why they need a product, but is not required to start earning sales.
So, in as little as 1 hour from now and as little as a 28 startup budget you can gain your first sale Then, as the money starts rolling in you can expand to start generating thousands of dollars of income a month
For probably the worlds quickest, easiest, and cheapest business to start

Hotmail Users Switching To GMail
Having been a Hotmail user for years and a GMail users for months I was suprised recently to discover that there are still a lot of people who are not aware that GMail even exists never mind the advantages that it holds over the other webmail systems. A lot of my more tech-savvy friends have already switched from Hotmail to Gmail, all of our e-mail is handled via Gmail but what about the normal man on the street? For example my daughter recently did an address swap with some new friends that she had made, her address was a Gmail account but all of her friends were using Hotmail and had no idea that anything other than Hotmail even existed!
Well, the result of a study I read recently reveal that roughly 50 percent of customers switching to Gmail came from a Hotmail address each month. Only approx 28 percent being from a Yahoo Mail account. Just who are these users that are switching? My experiences tell me that it is the tech-heads who are changing, hopefully when the word of GetMail spreads Joe average may think about making that change safe in the fact the joining Hotmail users who switch can be made easy. For my own part I am doing all I can to spread the word of GMail and have told my daughter to invite her friends. With the release of Google talk the final excuse for holding onto Hotmail (the perception that it is tied with MSN Messenger) has gone.

Home Office: Is Gmail the Hotmail Killer?
I got lucky. One of the Google PR guys set me up with a Gmail account. That's Google's new Web-based e-mail that's getting so much buzz. And well it should--it's a hot product, one that I like for lots of reasons.
The Gmail Back Story
Features aside for a minute, I think it's important to understand why I'm predicting Gmail will be insanely popular.
It's clear the folks at Google know a thing or two about marketing. They've built a massive foothold in users' minds with their search engine. (I know, that's a mixed metaphor, but it's my newsletter, okay?) People know the name, and trust the company to turn out cool products. Based on my experience with Google's smart Toolbar I anticipated a bright, innovative e-mail service. I was right.
But why anyone would bother with Google when a slug of companies already offer Web-based e-mail? One word: advertising. When I think about two of the best-known e-mail services, MSN Hotmail and Yahoo Mail (my least favorites), I visualize their ad-laden, cluttered screens.
What's appealing about Gmail--and what's stirring up so much controversy--is the way it handles advertising. Gmail reads my e-mail (actually, no humans read it; it's scanned by a computer), determines the content, and posts a text ad on the page. The ads are unobtrusive, just like the ones you see on the right side of the page in Google searches.
So far, many of the ads I've seen have been wildly inaccurate: For example, promoting glass windows when I talk about Windows, and deep-sea fishing when I get e-mail from someone at Sunbelt Software. Take a look at a couple of screen shots--one from Google's official ad page sample, and one from my account.
Dig This: Do you ever get tired of hearing Windows sounds--you know, like the error ding or the annoying alert when you've done something dumb? Some folks don't mind them. In fact, someone created a musical composition that uses these sounds.
The Gmail Controversy
If you've been reading my scribblings for a while, you know I have tight rules about privacy. I'm not threatened by Gmail, for two reasons. First, the ads aren't placed in the body of my e-mail. Second, call me naive (you will anyway), but I don't believe any one person at Google is examining my e-mail.
To get you up to speed on the ad issues--and to save me from repeating all the controversial details--I dug up a few articles.
Almost 30 organizations, including the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse and the Electronic Privacy Information Center, are up in arms about Gmail. Learn more in "Google's Gmail Already Under Fire."
In "Privacy Issues Plague Google's Gmail," Google addresses some of the accusations and begins a little posturing, saying it may make changes.
Another company has decided to step into the e-mail fray and challenge Google. I wonder, though, if the company's name--Spymac Network--might dissuade some people from trying it. (Hey, don't sue me, I was just pointing out the obvious.) Read "Spymac Rolls Out Free E-Mail" for details.
One question I have is whether Google will continue to provide Gmail for free. Eric Bender took a look at Hotmail and Yahoo's strategy for sneaking in fees. Read the whole story in "Free Web Mail: Here to Stay?"
Some of you may be new to the game and don't know much about Web-based e-mail. Our e-mail aficionado, Dan Tynan, crafted "Hassle-Free E-Mail," a solid article about, well, e-mail. If you want to see what Dan has to say about Web-based e-mail in particular, go directly to the chart on page 5.
Dig This: Want to play plastic surgeon? Can do--just head for the Morphases site and start changing faces. You should be able to kill a half hour instead of working on an important project.
Next week? Gmail's features, including the super-duper 1GB limit, quirky e-mail threading, and not-so-hot spam filtering.

Google Adsense Profits Mixed In With Affiliate Marketing
With affiliate marketing, you may get a lot of cash pouring into your bank account easily. And if your website is rich in great contents and you want to earn more profit, why not get into the Google Adsense program as well?
Affiliate marketing has become one of the most effective ways to advertise online. It is also one of the easiest ways for anyone with a website to make a profit online. Affiliate Marketing is an agreement between a merchant and a website owner. The website owner, or the affiliate, allows the use of their site for the promotion of the merchant's products by linking to the merchant's website. In exchange, the merchant pays a commission to the affiliate on all sales generated by the affiliate. Every time someone clicks on the link on the affiliate website and proceeds to make a purchase, the affiliate gets a commission. The merchant will pay the affiliate only when a customer clicks on the product link and makes a purchase.
Are you a webmaster who needs funds to keep your website running? Or is your website the only way for you to earn income? Whichever you are, for as long as you are a webmaster or a web publisher and you need cash, affiliate marketing may work well for you. With affiliate marketing, you may get a lot of cash pouring into your bank account easily. And if your website is rich in great contents and you want to earn more profit, why not get into the Google Adsense program as well?
Why Affiliate Marketing?
Well, simply because affiliate marketing is the easiest and probably the best way to earn profits online, unless otherwise you are a businessman and would rather sell your own products online than advertise other businessman’s products on your site. But even online retailers can benefit from affiliate marketing programs, because affiliate marketing actually works for merchants as well as it works for the affiliates.
Affiliate marketing, simply said, is a relationship or agreement made between two websites, with one site being the merchant’s website and the other being the affiliate’s site. In the relationship, the affiliate agrees to let the merchant advertise his products on the affiliate’s site. The merchant, on the other hand, would agree to pay the affiliate in whatever method they have agreed into. This would generally mean easy income for the affiliate, as he would do nothing but place the retailer’s ad on his site. This would also be very beneficial for the merchant, as getting affiliates to advertise their products would be a lot more affordable than hiring an advertising firm to promote their products.
There are a variety of methods on how the merchant would compensate the affiliate for his services, and for the webmaster, these methods simply translates to the method by which he would earn easy cash. Among the more common methods of compensation are the pay-per-click method, the pay-per-lead method, and the pay-per-sale method. The pay-per-click method is the method most preferred by affiliates, for their site’s visitor would only have to visit the advertiser’s site for them to gain money. The other two methods, on the other hand, are better preferred by merchants, as they would only have to compensate you if your visitor becomes one of their registrants or if the visitor would actually buy their products.
Getting much profit on affiliate marketing programs, however, does not depend so much on the compensation method is it does on the traffic generated by your site. A website that can attract more visitors would generally have the greater chance of profiting in affiliate marketing programs.
What about Google Adsense?
Google Adsense is actually some sort of an affiliate marketing program. In Google Adsense, Google act as the intermediary between the affiliates and the merchants. The merchant, or the advertiser, would simply sign up with Google and provide the latter with text ads pertaining to their products. These ads, which is actually a link to the advertiser’s website, would then appear on Google searches as well as on the websites owned by the affiliates, or by those webmasters who have signed up with the Google Adsense program.
While one can find a lot of similarities between Google Adsense and other affiliate marketing programs, you can also see a lot of differences. In Google Adsense, all the webmaster has to do is place a code on his website and Google takes care of the rest. The ads that Google would place on your site would generally be relevant to the content of your site. This would be advantageous both for you and for the advertiser, as the visitors of your site would more or less be actually interested with the products being advertised.
The Google Adsense program compensates the affiliate in a pay-per-click basis. The advertisers would pay Google a certain amount each time their ad on your site is clicked and Google would then forward this amount to you through checks, although only after Google have deducted their share of the amount. Google Adsense checks are usually delivered monthly. Also, the Google Adsense program provides webmasters with a tracking tool that allows you to monitor the earnings you actually get from a certain ad.
So, where do all of these lead us to?
Where else but to profits, profits and even more profits! Affiliate marketing programs and the Google Adsense program simply work, whether you are the merchant or the affiliate. For the merchant’s side, a lot of money can be saved if advertising effort is concentrated on affiliate marketing rather than on dealing with advertising firms. For the webmaster, you can easily gain a lot of profits just by doing what you do best, and that is by creating websites. And if you combine all your profits from both the Google Adsense program and other affiliate marketing programs, it would surely convert to a large amount of cash.
All the same, the best benefit of being an affiliate marketer is the opportunity to increase your income; and you can make a profit even if affiliate marketing is only a sideline business. With your own affiliate business, you can earn easily earn extra income, although you do have to exert effort and use your imagination to maximize your earning potential. Indeed, affiliate marketing is one of the simplest and most effective business opportunities on the web today.

How to make money using Google Adsense and affiliate programs.
Google Adsense is a structured way to earn good money out of what Google makes from its advertisers on Adwords. The way it works is that advertisers pay top dollar to get their ads listed on Google. Google gets paid on every click that happens on the ad. By distributing the ads on your website and mine, they stand to gain more exposure, regain advertising funds quicker and also pay us good money!
Why you benefit?
The reason Adsense has become so popular is because it allows websites like ours to earn good money from the commissions Google receives from advertisers. By just placing a couple of ads on the site, you can earn a good commission percentage. However, there are certain drawbacks that an Adsense program has.
What it can do for your site
One good thing about Adsense is its immediate ability to boost your page ranking and popularity on search engines. That way you tend to receive a lot of traffic to your affiliate site. Also, people with affiliate programs on their site can actually look at Adsense as an alternate way of supplementing their income. Adsense lets you monitor which ads are performing and earning you most income. They do this by placing some Javascript code into your site which monitors the performance. Most of the time the traffic that comes to your site will most likely not find what they are looking for, on your site alone. That's where Adsense helps you. Even if customers don't find what they're looking for on your site, they can still visit the ads sponsored by Adsense and help provide you additional income. It basically provides you an alternate path to earn money online.
The context
In order to make your Adsense program most profitable as part of your affiliate program, you need to ensure you have contextual and relevant ads placed on your site. Else it defeats the very purpose. You want customers to click on these ads if they don't find something on your site. Hence it needs to be closely related to your website theme and your own products. Most contextual ads are characterized by lots of clicks but poor conversion rates. So make sure to test these ads out before placing them on your site. Pros and cons Both affiliate marketing and Google's Adsense have their own pitfalls and benefits. Here we explain the pros and cons of each.
Google Adsense:
Pros:
- Good for informational sites which do not have associated affiliate products to sell
- It allows you to create a content page without worrying about updating the content
- Very scalable. Adsense sites are low maintenance which make these good for the upkeep of multiple sites.
Cons:
- Not a good income generator when considering long term opportunities. It's because mailing lists are best for building customer relations. In Adsense you aren't asking for a subscription, instead just asking customers to click on ads.
- Search engine dependency. Adsense sites predominantly depend on the search engines to divert traffic. Hence if by chance an algorithm changes on a search engine, you risk losing a lot of income and traffic in the process.
Affiliate marketing:
Pros:
- More long term in nature which allows you to build on assets and customer relations
- Main focus is on creating and building email lists since they are the backbone for all promotional efforts
- Allows you to focus on a niche segment you like. This is unlike an Adsense program which tends to focus on only high paying keywords.
Cons:
- Involves the use and skill over persuasive tactics in order to coax customers to visit the site and buy products. For novices, this can be a difficult aspect.
- Every site needs plenty of effort. You need to spend time in creating product reviews, email list creation as well as web content creation - which can take up considerable time.
Balance it out
Both Adsense as well as affiliate marketing have their own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the best approach would be to balance the two to maximize your income potential online. You could have content on your site which you are interested in, while combining it with Adsense revenues

The Truth about Google’s Adsense affiliate program.
The truth about Google’s Adsense program is that it is amazing. It’s the greatest affiliate program ever invented. There is no affiliate program that even comes close. If you are not using Google’s Adsense, you’re truly missing out on a great opportunity. I’ve tried several other affiliate programs, and the only one that is creating revenue even close to Google’s, is the Amazon.com affiliate program. Amazon.com’s affiliate program pays 5% commission and up for shipped products. It’s not really clear how Google pays you, but let me tell you it seems very fair. They do not pay per clicks, leads, or click throughs; they have a secret formula that no one will tell. But trust me it works. I was making pennies off of clicks monthly, until I joined Google. Then the pennies became dollars.
Here are some basic tips for signing up with Google’s Adsense program.
Tip # 1
If you search multiple websites in different categories you’ll find one thing in common. Almost all of them have Google ads and nothing else. This is because most other programs are a waste of time. Don’t take my word for it. Try other programs, but don’t skip Google’s Adsense.
Tip # 2
Google’s search spiders are so specific, that the ads that appear on each page correspond exactly to some element of that page. Therefore, having ads from other companies is not a good idea.
TIP # 3
You can place text, image, banner ads and even a search box that will earn your company revenue. Do not place a search box from another company on the same page as Google’s search box. They may stop working with you.
In summary, the Adsense program is a great way to make revenue, has incredibly targeted ads and don’t use other search boxes on the same page as a Google search box. If you have any questions about Google’s Adsense program, you can email me at tech1@techpizza.com

Can Google Adsense Help My Affiliate Programs?
If you are looking for business opportunities, affiliate programs are all the rage today. Simply typing affiliate programs into any search engine will yield a multitude of results with links to websites offering various affiliate programs, promising anything from instant riches to long time financial security. Part of the allure of affiliate programs is that unlike running a business of your own, with an affiliate business you don’t have to deal with things like inventory, storage, packing, shipping, complaints, returns, phone calls, emails, checks or credit cards. In fact, your only responsibility is to direct people to your affiliate site through your affiliate link.
While not having to deal with the aforementioned things, and at the same time being able to earn commissions as high as 75% may sound alluring, and no doubt it should, the reality is more times then not like anything in life it takes time to build your affiliate business to the point where it begins to make you money. In the mean time you must deal with expenses that may stem from advertising, hosting your own website, monthly affiliate fees, etc. Anyway to offset these expenses is welcome!
Google AdSense Not only offers you this opportunity but many affiliate based businesses rely on Google AdSense for a large chunk of their monthly commissions! What Google AdSense allows you to do is to display Google ads on your website that are relevant to the content on your website without distracting from it. When people click on a Google AdSense ad that’s on your website you earn a commission. The program is free to join and also offers other ways to earn additional income as we’ll. You can even think of it as an additional affiliate program earning additional money for you that you would otherwise have never seen!
The fact is, most people who visit your affiliate website will not buy from you. They will simply look around and then leave. Of the ones that do end up buying they will most likely visit your website several times before making a buying decision. In fact it will take an average of 7-12 times for a person to visit your website before they do buy. That is because people want to weigh all of their options. They want to see what other business opportunities or affiliate programs are available to them by visiting other websites, and then they need time to consider which one to go with. If someone is going to visit your website and then leave without buying, wouldn’t you rather that they leave by clicking on a link that you will earn a guaranteed commission on?
Do you see why Google AdSense will always be a very important part of your affiliate business? Running an affiliate business is, like anything else in life, a numbers game. Google AdSense offers you the opportunity to profit off of the numbers of people who will never buy from you, (the vast majority), as well as enable you to get additional revenue from the ones that will eventually buy from you! I assume your desire is to make as much money as you possibly can from an affiliate business of your own? If that is the case then you cannot afford, not to have Google AdSense on your affiliate website!

How Google Affiliate Will Change the World
Amazon, watch out. Earlier today, Google launched an affiliate ad network. Or, rather, it rebranded Performics, the affiliate ad network that came along with its purchase of DoubleClick, as the "Google Affiliate Network." As with other affiliate networks such as Amazon's, participating Website publishers get paid a fee for each referral that results in a sale. Existing advertisers include Bank of America, Barnes & Noble, Citi, Target, and Verizon.
Google constantly looking for ways to improve AdSense by developing and supporting features which drive the best monetization results for our publishers. Sometimes, this requires retiring existing features so they can focus our efforts on the ones that will be most effective in the long term. For this reason, they will be retiring the AdSense Referrals program during the last week of August.
Google acquired the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate operations in March 2008. Together, they're creating new opportunities for monetization, expansion, and innovation in affiliate marketing.
Performics was founded as the first full-service affiliate network in 1998 and was acquired by DoubleClick in 2004. Today Performics Affiliate operates as Google Affiliate Network and remains committed to delivering affiliate channel growth for advertisers and publishers
As part of the integration of DoubleClick, the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network will now operate as the Google Affiliate Network for advertisers targeting users located in the United States. Similar to the AdSense Referrals program, the Google Affiliate Network enables publishers to apply for advertiser programs and get paid based on advertiser-defined actions instead of clicks or impressions
As we can see, most of the affiliate programs like ClickBank, Comission Junctions and Linkshare still control the arena of affiliate world. But soon to be leader, Google Affiliate will replace all the system. Most of the Internet User will still trust Google rather than other affiliate program.

Capturing Attention: Your Blogging Hook
Think of what you have watched and heard on television and you’ll quickly start to rattle off the hooks and tag lines of many of the biggest corporations out there. Their hook is what they say or sing during a commercial.
Nike: Just do it.
Apple: Think different.
United Airlines: Fly the friendly skies.
American Express: Don’t leave home without it.
Pepsi: The choice of a new generation.
Disneyland: The happiest place on Earth.
These hooks capture your attention. Chances are their songs and tag lines often get stuck in your head because what they offered and how they said it was catchy. Often times you don’t even realize that you know the hook until it belts from your mouth.
It’s often been said that we have just a few seconds to capture the attention of our visitors, to give them our hook so that they can choose to stay or go. Maybe subscribe or unsubscribe.
We’re constantly building hooks with how we open our posts, what a visitor might see when they hit our site, the images that we use as avatars, the way that we write or speak, and our networking skills. These hooks draw people in or turn them away.
Knowing this, it’s become more and more vital that we draw attention to ourselves using hooks.
Recently, in a forum discussion on the Hive, Chris Garrett asked how others wanted to be known. The ultimate hook associated with your name. For me, as my blog’s tag line reads, I want to be know as the “How to Tips for Bloggers†girl. When you think of Katy Castro, think of how to tips for bloggers. When you think of I’m Blogging That, think how to tips for bloggers.
Are you getting my hook?
Why You Need One
Having a tag line or hook serves as quick way to show your purpose to those who visit your blog. Just as the companies I have mentioned above, your hook is how the blogosphere will know you.
By visitors reading a single quick line, you can make yourself valuable to them and leave it to them to decide if you or your site can serve a purpose for them. Keep in mind, visitors are self-serving. Rarely does a visitor pop on to a blog and read because they want to help others. Instead, it’s to help themselves.
A hook or tag line will quickly tell your visitor your self-serving purpose for them. And while it may sound like you could turn away a couple of people from your site, you could also increase your visibility to others.
Creating a Hook
Evaluate what your site has to provide those who visit to determine what best suits the needs of both you and your visitors when creating your hook. Think smart when it comes to the creation of your hook. Remember, this is how you want to be known and how you will demonstrate to others that your site is helpful for them. Here’s a few things to consider when brainstorming your hook.
Niche
Your blogging niche will have a lot to do with the hook that you create. I wouldn’t talk about something other than blogging in my tagline, that just doesn’t make any sense and won’t capture attention.
Writing Style
Not everyone will have something that stands out from their writing style that can be used as part or all of a hook. But, don’t overlook it if you think there might be something there.
Defining Yourself
Can you sum up one of the things you love the most about yourself that also relates to your blog?
Personality
Are you funny, silly, crazy, outgoing, shy, or reserved? Can a personality trait such as this help to define the hook that you present to the world?
Using Your Hook
Once you have created the hook/tag line that best suits you and serves a purpose for both you and visitors, it’s time to use it. Keep in mind that what you have created is how you will become known if you decide to implement your hook throughout the web. For attracting attention based on your tag line, consider using it in the following places:
Your Blog
First and foremost, make it part of your site. A statement in your sidebar or an addition to your header image. Display the hook in an obvious location or it won’t get the attention it deserves.
Signatures
Forum and eMail signatures are a great place to display your hook tag line. These places get a quick glance over and the extra addition of a short tag line could be exactly what is needed to get new visitors.
Social Media
How many times have you filled in an ‘about me’ box with information about your site and yourself? These are great places to place your tag line. Keeping your ‘about’ short encourages people to actually read it and using your hook here will generate more impact.
Guest Posting
If you decide to guest post on another blog, your hook can become part of the about the author signature within the post. This always needs to be kept to a minimum so consider how lengthy your hook is before using this as your about.
Your Hook
How do you want to be known throughout the blogosphere? Have you created a hook or tag line that has become a quick reference for the type of blog that you have or the information that you provide? How are you using your tag line and have you become associated with the tag line? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

How to Make Money From Your Website
by Christopher Heng, thesitewizard.com
Now that you've created a website, how do you make money from it? There are at least two ways in which sites can make money:
Advertising Revenue
Selling Goods and Services
I shall deal with the second case, "Selling goods and services", in another article. In this article, I will address the issue of how your site can actually make money from advertising.
Making Money From Advertising
If you look at many websites, you will probably notice that there are banner advertisements displayed on most pages. If you are a newcomer to the scene, you might think that you must either be a company or that your site must be famous before you can get advertisers, just as it is the case in hardcopy publications.
In reality, anyone with a website can get advertisers. While it is true that if your site is well-known, you may get companies contacting you to offer to advertise on your site, you can get advertising revenue even if you are just starting out and your site is relatively unknown.
The way to do this is to join as an "affiliate" of various sites, either directly, or through an affiliate network. An affiliate network is simply an intermediary where you can select from a variety of advertisers.
Payment Schemes
Before joining any program, you should probably be aware of the different payment schemes available.
Pay Per Impression (CPM)
Here, you are paid according to the number of times the advertiser's banner is displayed on your site. The amount you earn is typically calculated based on the number of thousand impressions of the banner (impressions = number of times the banner is displayed), often abbreviated CPM (cost per thousand, with the M being the Latin numeral for thousand). That is, $5 CPM means that you get paid $5 for 1,000 displays of the banner. In general, the amount paid is usually small, but it is easy to earn since everytime a visitor loads the page, you earn. This is known as a "high conversion rate". Needless to say, this method will allow you to automatically earn more if your site attracts a lot of visitors.
Pay Per Click (PPC)
When you are paid per click, you are only paid when visitors click the advertiser's banner on your site. The amount paid is usually higher than the pay per impression scheme. Whether you get a high conversion rate here depends on the banner (whether it attracts people to click it), although in general, it has a higher conversion rate than the pay per sale method. A high traffic site will probably enjoy a higher click rate than a lower traffic site, although you will probably get better results if your banners are carefully selected to suit the target audience of your site.
Pay Per Sale or Lead
While you will probably get the highest payment rates with this method, it has the lowest conversion rate of the three schemes. You will only earn if your visitors click through the banner and either purchase an item from the advertiser or take some other prescribed action (eg, sign up for a service). Like the Pay Per Click method, you get much better results if you carefully select your advertisers to suit the target audience of your site.
In general, to avoid wasting resources in issuing cheques for very small amounts, advertisers will usually accrue the amount owing to you until it reaches a certain level (such as $25) before they pay you.
Where to Find Affiliate Programs
You can find a list of affiliate programs and affiliate networks on thefreecountry.com's Affiliate Program page at http://www.thefreecountry.com/webmaster/affiliate.shtml
To join an affiliate network or program, simply go to the site and complete their online application form. Some programs will give you instant approval while others require a human to check out your application before it is approved. Once it is approved, you'll be given some HTML code which you can cut and paste into your web page. Note that some affiliate networks and programs will not accept you unless you have your own domain name. If you are planning to earn from your site, you should seriously consider registering your own domain name.
How To Choose An Affiliate Program
How should you choose an affiliate program? My suggestion is not to choose a program according to the payment scheme, but rather according to the kind of people who are likely to visit your website. For example, if you are targeting parents on your site, links to affiliates with educational software, books and the like may generate more revenue than banners that link to web hosting companies. The most important rule of choosing an affiliate program is to know your target audience.
Another point to consider is whether you really want to join every single affiliate program that comes your way. Some studies suggest that sites that make the most money from affiliate programs are affiliates of only a small handful of programs. Furthermore, concentrating your advertisements from one network may allow you to be paid faster. If you advertise for hundreds of different affiliate networks on your site, you may wind up earning only (say) a few dollars per month from each network. If your advertiser's minimum payment amount is higher than what you can earn each month, it may take you a long time before you accrue enough to be paid.
On the other hand, that formula does not necessarily hold true for every site (or every page on your site, for that matter). For example, if your site has a particular theme, and an affiliate network only supports one or two suitable advertisers, you might want to sign up for a few affiliate networks so as to get a greater number of relevant advertisers. After all, advertisements that are relevant to your audience are more likely to be taken up than general advertisements. (What's the point of putting banners from only one affiliate if nobody is going to click them?)
Automated Context-Sensitive Advertising
One of the latest trends in website sponsorship is to sign up with an advertising network like Google AdSense The advertising network automatically checks your web page and determines the most relevant advertisement for the page. As a result, without much additional effort from you, you get advertisements targeted at the interests of your visitors. As mentioned earlier, targeted ads tend to result in better performance and returns.
Get Started
Advertising revenue is one of the most effortless way to earn money from your site. You merely have to put the banner there and wait for the money to roll in. (Well, okay, not quite. You will still need to have some visitors first before you can make anything.)
Why wait? If you already have a website, let it earn even while you sleep (literally). Every day you let your site "idle" without advertising is a day of lost opportunity.
All the best in your endeavour! Remember also to check out our other article, Increasing Your Affiliate Program Income, for more tips on earning from your website: http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/moremoney.shtml

How to Make a Website
Making a website for a band combines the classical idea of live music and the social networking power of the Internet. Whoever is in charge of the band's website should realize this and figure out how a website facilitates fans finding, listening to, learning about, eventually following the band through their development. It's not just a calling card, these days, a band's website is much more, and can attract fans and build a solid fan base.
steps 1-Think of ideas for your new website. If you already know what you want to make your website about, skip this step. Otherwise, make note of those moments when you think to yourself "I wish there was a website that..." Whenever you see a friend with any kind of problem or frustration, try and think of a website that would help him/her. Looking for a tidbit of information or a unique product that's nowhere to be found? Brainstorm and write down all of your ideas, no matter how ridiculous they may seem. There's no better place than the Internet to turn an idea into gold. You can also get help by searching the web with "website ideas".
Identify your market. What kinds of people would each of your website ideas serve? Some websites, like Yahoo or Google, are as general as it gets, while other sites, like ILoveAlpacas.com, serve a very specific bunch. Write down the target market next to each of the ideas on your list. Conduct market research--Who is your audience? What do they do? How old are they? What are their other interests? All of this information can help you make your website more useful to you.
Figure out your commitment. How much time and money are you willing to put into your website? You can start and run a website for free, but the more money you want to make from your site, the more time and money you'll have to invest. If you don't care too much about making money (like if you're just interested in showing off your dried bug collection) you can get away with free web hosting and sporadic maintenance.
Content sites will require less investment, but you will also face more competition, since anyone can start a content site. To make money from this kind of site, you provide information and generate income from the traffic you receive through advertising.
E-commerce sites, which sell products, will need more maintenance and attention. You will also need to think about shipping, sales, order form security, inventory updates, and everything that a person with an offline storefront would have to manage.
Narrow down your list. Which ideas stand to make the most profits? Which ideas require the most commitment? Which ideas look like they'd be fun to pursue? You will be spending time working on your website, so choose the idea you are most passionate about (that is also profitable and practical for you).
Register a domain name (one that's easy to remember and spell) and choose a web host. For more complicated websites, be willing to shell out the extra bucks; or, you can opt for a free web hosting, which will probably mean having a URL like www.yourdomain.webhostname.com and ads plastered all over your webpage. Read the fine print.
Build your website. Here you have a few different options.
Get a website-building program and do it yourself. While this might work for your dried bug page, if you are unsure of your design eye and ability, then it's probably not the best choice if you're trying to make a sharp, professional impression (especially if you're trying to get people to part with their money).
Learn a programming language (or two, or three) and build a website from scratch.
HTML is incredibly easy to learn, and if you're up to it, you'll be able to tweak your web design any way you want, and you won't have to pay anybody else to update or change your site.
XHTML is the new web language set by W3C's standards. Almost identical to HTML, it follows a stricter set of rules for marking up information - what this means, for the most part, is minor changes to the way you write code.
CSS, which stands for "Cascading Style Sheets", gives more flexibility for styling the HTML.
A browser sided scripting language, such as JavaScript, allows you to make your page interactive.
A server sided scripting language (PHP, ASP with JavaScript or VB Script or Python) can be used to make things on your site move and edit or create forums.
AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a technique of using a browser sided language and a server sided language to make the page get new information from the server without refreshing the page, often greatly reducing user wait time and vastly improving the user's experience but increasing bandwidth usage. Think of the possibilities: you could probably make a web based instant messaging service!
Hire a professional. This is the best option for more advanced sites, especially e-commerce sites.
Use keywords that your target audience would search for to get a better search engine ranking. There are several tools available from Google, Overture, and third party software developers that can make the keyword research process easier. Sprinkle the keywords you've chosen throughout your text, but not to the extent that it hurts the quality of your content.
Upload your website. Your web host may have an FTP feature, or you can download your own FTP program like FileZilla. If you hired a professional to design the website, he or she may take care of this for you.
Test drive your website. When you finish your website, do usability testing. You can do this by simply asking a few friends or family members to use your website. Give them a specific task like "edit your profile" or "buy an alpaca sweater from the bargains page." Sit behind them and watch them navigate. Do not help them. You will likely find areas where you need to improve navigation or clarify some instructions.
Advertise. Submit your site to major search engines. Tell your friends. Use an e-mail address with your domain. Visit other websites that complement (not compete with) yours, and offer to exchange links. Post constructively on blogs and forums, and put your URL in your signature.
Provide quality content and service. This is what will ultimately make your website awesome. Be sensitive to feedback - take it seriously. Think about your target market: their needs, their frustrations, their circumstances, and seek to make their lives easier. Strive for a win-win situation for you and your visitors.
[edit] TipsBegin with simple things, practice them and then advance, even if what you create is not very impressive at the time; don't attempt to rush through the tutorials in one. You need to understand them very well, so take your time and test things out. If you wonder whether or not something will work, don't suppress the urge, but find out.
People are often in a hurry. This means that you may only have between 10 and 30 seconds to capture your visitor's attention. To minimize your load time, keep graphics small. Compress them where possible. Use flashy technology JavaScript, Flash, Streaming Audio/Video, etc. sparingly and only if it is important to your presentation.
If you intend to sell a product on your website, you'll need to be able to accept secure credit card payments. You can apply for a merchant account, which charges a per-transaction fee, or use a free payment service like PayPal.
Before beginning to read a tutorial, make sure it's the best of the best; you don't want to find half way through that the tutorial's flawed or putting you to sleep. You don't want to have to read the same content over again in a good tutorial, do you? So look into lots of search engine results before picking your tutorial!
Find popular websites, even if they don't have much to do with yours, and use them as models. What are they doing right? Incorporate what you learn from the big shots into your own website. Don't be a copycat, but don't re-invent the wheel.
If you hire a professional to code a complicated site, remember that programmers are not all graphic designers. The most eye-catching sites out there have been made by or with the input of someone involved in graphic design.
WarningsNever violate your visitors' trust. Respect their privacy. Spam, annoying pop-ups, and irrelevant ads will hurt your credibility. A clear privacy statement is one way to build your credibility. Provide a prominent link to your privacy statement from every page on the site as well as from any location that you are asking your visitors for personal information. Provide legitimate contact information online. If you need to use ads on your website, explain to your visitors why, and show them that you're doing your best to accommodate their visit. And mean it!
Remember, never delete the details (username, password, etc.) of your account. If you don't have the details when you forget them, you will not be able to work on your website again. More importantly, never give out your details (except for your website address).
If you use content from another website, be it a picture, a JavaScript, or whatever, get permission and give them credit for it. If you don't, they might sue you

Google Adsense Advertising Policies
Google Adsense is a program that allows businesses to advertise on other websites. They business only pays the host website when a consumer clicks on the link to take them to their website. This is a very effective way of advertising because of the millions of people who access the internet every day. It is also a low cost marketing method that businesses of all sizes can benefit from. Websites are eager to host advertisements for other businesses because it doesn’t cost them anything and they earn money for doing it when consumers choose to follow the link from a particular advertisement.
If you are interested in using Google Adsense to advertise then you need to make sure you are aware of their policies. This will make the process smoother for you and eliminate any misunderstandings down the road. This can be a great money maker or advertising tool, but only when it is used correctly.
There is no long term contract with Google Adsense. You can choose to leave the program at any time. You will need to provide written notice by mail or email to Google. All ads will be removed from your website within ten days. They also have the right to discontinue your business from the program at any time for not following their policies. You do have the right to file an appeal if your account is canceled. This gives you the opportunity to discuss the situation with a Google Adsense representative.
You must be approved by Google Adsense before you are allowed to be a part of the program either as a host site for advertisements or to post your ads. The owner of the website must be at least 18 years of age. The approval process involves an application that you complete with information on your website including keywords. You will have a response to your application within two days. Make sure it is completed entirely or your application will be denied.
All communications must take place with Google. This means if you have concerns or issues about an advertisement your business has on a website or about an ad you are hosting on your website everything goes through Google. The two businesses are not to discuss the issue between each other. Google does not guarantee a set amount of clicks or earnings for a host website. It also doesn’t guarantee any increase in traffic or sales for a business.
Google Adsense has the right to use the name of businesses participating in the program for presentations, marketing, and financial reports. Users of Google Adsense are required to pay for the amount of pay per clicks their ads received as outlined. Adsense accounts are non-transferable under any circumstances. They can’t be resold to another provider. A maximum of three ads per webpage can be displayed. Advertisements can’t be placed on webpages that don’t contain content for your website. A webpage can’t be used for the sole purpose of displaying ads to make money.
Click fraud is not acceptable at all by Google Adsense. It damages the reputation of the program and costs the advertisers a great deal of money. Any website hosting advertisements that is believed to be involved in Click Fraud will be banned from using the program. If you chose to use Google Adsense to advertise your business, protect it from Click fraud by purchasing Click Fraud software.
Google Adsense is a great opportunity for businesses to advertise their products and services on various websites and pay only for the number of consumers who click on the link to go to that businesses website. It is also a great way for a business to make money by hosting advertisements for other businesses. Understanding the policies of Google Adsense will help you determine if the program is right for you. It also helps the program work properly for all those involved in it.

Google Adsense: Do I Need A Pin Number For Google Adsense?
When you accumulate $50.00 in earnings, Google Adsense will send you a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to the payment address you supplied when you signed up. This is just another security precaution that Google Adsense has in place to protect their publishers but it is important.
Once you’ve been mailed a PIN number, your account payments will be on hold until the PIN is entered in your account. You can still have access to your account and earn money; you just won’t be paid until the PIN is entered. If it hasn’t been entered within 1 year, your account will be disabled.
To enter your PIN after you receive it in the mail, log into your Google Adsense account. Click on the My Account tab, then click on edit. Update the appropriate field and click submit changes. It would also be a good time to check your contact information and make sure it is correct. You’re now well on your way to receiving your first Google Adsense check

Google Adsense: What is Google Adsense for Search
Google Adsense for Search is different than Adsense for Content but it is just as important to your earning power with the Google Adsense program.
Just like Adsense for Content places targeted ads on your content pages, Adsense for Search places targeted ads on the results page of the search set in motion on your page.
You can use the standard Google search box on your site and the user can then search the web or even your site. When you feel more comfortable, you can change the look of the Google search box, essentially customizing it by changing the colors and using your logo.
The best thing about Google Adsense for Search is that you can track what your visitors are searching for. That is, if the search has two or more hits. Unique queries will not be tracked. But you can see the top 25 searches performed from your website by clicking on the Advance Report from the Reports tab and specifying a date range

How to Explain the Google Adsense Program to Others
We’re not talking about strangers here. For the strangers that visit your site, your content will have to do all the talking for you. But for the people in your daily life, the ones you want to click on your referral button, the ones you want to read and comment on your blog; these are the ones you want to be able to enlighten about the Google Adsense program.
First, excitement breeds excitement. Get excited about your new venture and others will too. Learn everything you can about the Google Adsense program, not only will this increase your earnings, but you’ll be better equipped to explain the mechanics of the program to others.
Show them the money. There’s nothing like a little proof to make a believer out of someone. You don’t have to wait until you’re making thousands per month, although that’s a healthy goal. But even a small deposit in your piggy bank is enough to intrigue most people. Can’t you just count those referrals now?

EU steps into row over Google ads deal with Yahoo
European regulators are investigating an online advertising deal brokered between Google and Yahoo following news of a similar inquiry by the US department of justice.
Under the terms of the deal, announced in June, Google will be able to sell advertising on its rival's website in return for a share of the profits. That prospect has angered rivals and customers, who believe this could hand too much power to the increasingly dominant Google.
A spokesman for EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes said that an inquiry into the $800m (£445m) agreement between the Silicon Valley-based companies was launched over the summer.
The news comes just a week after it emerged the US department of justice was conducting its own investigation, and had hired a prominent Washington litigator to oversee proceedings.
Sandy Litvack, the lawyer who headed the US government's anti-trust team under Jimmy Carter and more recently sat on the board of Disney, has been brought in to advise a team examining allegations that the arrangement is anti-competitive.
David Turetsky, a former US deputy assistant attorney general who specialised in anti-trust cases under the Clinton administration, said Litvack's reputation was a good indication that the government meant business.
With the investigation already running for several months and apparently considered a high-status case - which has allowed investigators to issue subpoenas for evidence - Turetsky said he believed the chances of an eventual lawsuit were high.
Yahoo responded to news of the Brussels investigation much as it had to the US inquiry, saying it would co-operate fully with investigators. Google, meanwhile, brushed aside the news by saying the terms of its deal would have no impact on the European advertising market.

Google's AdSense a bonanza for some Web sites
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — Canadian software developer and part-time humorist Eric Giguère made fun of the avalanche of Internet arthritis drug offers on his Web site last year. For his efforts, he received a $350 check from Internet search giant Google.
Giguère has one of those ubiquitous "Ads by Google" links on his site, offering ads the search giant considers of interest to readers. You might think that people rarely click on them, but they do — and often.
"For my own, personal humor writing, I got paid," Giguère says. "It certainly opened my eyes to the possibilities that were out there."
How AdSense works
Advertisers pay Google and Yahoo to have their ads appear next to search results. Google's AdSense program gives advertisers additional reach, by putting their ads onto an estimated 200,000 additional Web sites.
The twist is that Google pays each Web publisher a commission, in exchange for running the ads. It's found money for many publishers, who say they make anywhere from $50 to $200 a month and beyond.
Advertisers buy search keywords.
A purchase of "cell phone" for instance, produces ads next to search results on Google's main page. The same purchase also produces AdSense ads for cell phones on many other sites, including Chris Pirillo's Lockergnome gadget and gizmo blog, when cell phones are mentioned.
Google has a simple proposition for anyone who owns a Web site: Let it put up links to its ads, and Google's AdSense program will give you a piece of the action when someone clicks on them.
It's found money for many bloggers, small e-tailers and huge businesses — from small personal sites such as Giguère's, to those of big-time corporations such as Amazon.com, the New York Times and About.com.
Giguère was so inspired, he wrote a book, Make Easy Money with Google, coming in May from Peachpit Press. Hundreds of online forums and Web sites are devoted to AdSense tips and tricks. The downside of the AdSense economy, critics charge, is that the avalanche of ads has created a new form of spam and is destroying the integrity of sites.
"This is a program that rewards people not for creating the best content, but for how to create sites to attract more advertising," says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch online newsletter. "AdSense has nothing to do with search. It effectively turns the Internet into a billboard for Google's ads."
Google, whose executives often say their mission is to organize the world's information, naturally begs to differ. "If I do a search for the New York Times and see an ad offering a subscription discount, that's useful to me," says Susan Wojcicki, Google's director of product management.
Web site publishers don't disagree.
"Say I write an article about a Braun shaver," says Chris Pirillo, who runs the Lockergnome.com gadget Web site. "I publish it, and within minutes, I have targeted ads about shavers on my site. Someone who reads the content may feel compelled to pick one up. That helps me and the reader."
Tales of AdSense riches range from a few hundred dollars a month to $50,000 or more a year, though high-dollar paydays are rare. They require a Web site with tons of traffic and the ability to put in 18-hour days working the system.
Pirillo, who has a following from his former role as a host on the now-defunct TechTV cable channel, says he's clearing more than $10,000 a month.
Before AdSense, which began in March 2003, bloggers and other small Web publishers had fewer options to make money. They could put banner ads on their sites for a host of non-related products, or commission programs from Amazon and eBay. "It was a lot more work, and you didn't get much of a return," Pirillo says.
With AdSense, "You write content, publish it, and the money starts to pour in," he says.
When he published the now-defunct Silicon Alley Reporter magazine, Jason Calacanis says, he used to suffer from insomnia, worrying about his monthly $200,000 to $400,000 printing bill.
He now runs a company called Weblogs, which publishes 75 Web sites on such topics as cars, gadgets, digital music and video games. He sleeps much better, he says, because "with AdSense, you know you're always making money. Your life gets a lot easier."
In his first four months of Web publishing, AdSense brought in $45,000. Some of his blogs produce $3,000 a month. His best do "four figures," Calacanis says, though he's reluctant to fill in the exact numbers. "And that's with zero marketing," he says.
How it works
Google and Yahoo dominate the booming online search advertising business, which is expected to grow to $5.6 billion in 2008, from $2.7 billion in 2004. Profit from search advertising enabled Google to more than double its revenue in 2004, to $3.1 billion.
The concept — text ads that appear next to search results — works on a "pay-per-click" model. Advertisers pay only if someone clicks on an ad. To use the programs, advertisers buy "keywords" for anywhere from 5 cents to $100 a word. Those are the terms people type into query boxes when they're searching, such as "Atlanta wedding photographer" or "Omaha Italian restaurants."
AdSense works as a part of that keyword model; it's an offshoot of what Google calls its AdWords program, which competes against Yahoo's Overture unit.
AdSense is a bonus program for advertisers who use Google AdWords. Through AdSense, Google clients get to tout their wares beyond Google's home page — potentially reaching more than 200,000 participating Web sites.
Small Web site operators have flocked to AdSense as a way to attract advertising. To participate, they sign up at Google, which reviews the site. Once a small piece of computer code language is implanted on an accepted site, Google does the rest — matching ad links from its warehouse of clients to appropriate sites.
There's an art to optimizing a site to attract more links — and generate more revenue.
Gay Gilmore, who runs Seattle-based recipezaar.com, says the trick is to attract ads next to recipes beyond the main page. "The ads need to be targeted," she says, "so that when someone is reading about chicken soup, an ad for one of the ingredients is of keen interest."
Web site publishers need to be creative, says Dave Lavinsky of TopPayingKeywords.com, an AdSense advice site. A house painter advertising his services on a homemade site is leaving money on the table if he mentions only house painting, he says. "'Housepainting' is a 20-cent word. 'Home improvement' is worth $2, so you should create content for that."
But Sullivan says keyword tricks hurt the editorial integrity of sites. Another problem, he says, is the proliferation of computer-generated directories with links to hotels, restaurants and entertainment and no real editorial content, fueled by the availability of "Ads by Google" checks.
Wojcicki says Google tries to review all sites in its program, and removes offenders such as the directory sites. Critics say the site reviews can sometimes result in an FCC-like "family friendly" filter. Bloggers complain about being rejected for discussions of sexuality and use of four-letter words.
"I begged, argued and appealed to reason for months," says author Susie Bright, whose site discusses sexuality issues. "I pointed out that all my postings were things you could easily read in ... any number of mainstream magazines that cover sex and politics from a fairly sophisticated point of view. And I pointed out that my readers like to buy trousers, go on vacations, purchase ink and basically buy all the same things that everyone else does."
Wojcicki wouldn't address the specifics of Bright's concerns, but says AdSense isn't for everyone. "We're very careful about who we let into our network. We reject sites with content some people may feel uncomfortable about."
With pay-per-click ads, Google and Yahoo are locked in a bitter battle for advertiser dollars. But Yahoo doesn't compete with AdSense for small publishers — yet. Yahoo says it will introduce an offering later this year.
For now, Google's most notable AdSense competitor is privately held Kanoodle, which accepted Bright's site. It works with small publishers and big ones (including USATODAY.com and MSNBC) and differs from AdSense in that advertisers can choose topic areas of the sites where they want their ads to appear.
"The search advertising market is red hot right now, and publishers and advertisers want more," says Kanoodle CEO Lance Podell. "We offer them more places to show their ads, and they love that."
How long will search sizzle?
Google's initial public stock offering last summer was a Wall Street sensation. The stock opened at $85 a share and now sells for around $180, down from its 52-week high of $216. Some analysts fret that the red-hot paid search market could start to cool down.
Forrester Research, revising downward earlier projections, expects 30% growth in search advertising revenue this year, after a 45% jump in 2004.
"Click fraud" is another nettlesome issue for Google and Yahoo.
Advertisers pay for ads only when they're clicked, but it doesn't always work that way.
Some competitors click ads just to run up the other guy's bills. Web publishers with AdSense get their friends to click ads so they can get more money. Some savvy webmasters have set up automated clicking models called "Hitbots" or "Clickbots," which click away all day, and cost the advertiser.
Such efforts "threaten our business model," Google CFO George Reyes said at a recent industry conference. "Something has to be done about this, really, really quickly."
University of California professor John Battelle, who is writing a book on search, says the success of AdSense has built a "growing, extremely sophisticated offshore industry."
"There are more of these sites than you can imagine," he says. "The robots click on the ads and then none of the clicks turn into leads for the advertisers. That's not how it's supposed to work."
Google and Yahoo say they are working on the problem, but Battelle doesn't think that's enough.
Yahoo, Microsoft and America Online have banded together on several occasions to fight e-mail spam, and Battelle says Google and Yahoo should show the same kind of joint leadership. "Because if they don't, it will end up biting them in the butt."

How Can I Make Money Online...Quickly?
Are you sick and tired of having to deal with the tough financial times? Do you want to know how the 'other guys' do it? How do they make all that money online
? Have you ever asked yourself :'How can I make money online quickly?' Well, you can, and I can show you how.Imagine what it would be like to get up in the morning when you decide to, not when the alarm clock screams at you. What would it be like if your average 'work day' was only a couple of hours long? What would you do if you had plenty of money and plenty of time? These are questions most of us aren't used to asking ourselves, but if you really want to know how to make money online quickly, and are ready to put what you learn to use, you had better learn to start thinking that way. There are many ways to make money online quickly. I'll list a few of the most common ways. You could sell products on an auction site. This is probably what most people think of when you talk about an online business. This is a good way to make money, but there are some things you have to be aware of.Selling on an auction site is by no means a sure thing. Your item may not sell and you won't get back your listing fee if it doesn't. You also need a source to provide a steady stream of products to sell.Another very popular way to make money online quickly is with paid survey sites. There are several ways these sites work, one type involves you completing various offers. Some of the offers are free, some you will have to pay for. You can make money almost immediately on some of these sites. The downside to survey sites, though, is that you probably won't ever make a full time income. This is a better idea is you only want to make a few hundred dollars a month. To really make money online quickly... a full time income, I recommend affiliate marketing. This is simply when you sell someone else's products for a commission. Most affiliate marketing marketplaces will give you a free replicated website when you sign up to promote a certain product. That means you can have a website to send people to and a product to promote and it's all absolutely free. These are all good ways to make money online quickly. But no matter what method you choose there is one important factor you can't forget: marketing. No matter how great your product or service you need a steady stream of qualified customers or you won't make any money. Even if you have the absolute best website in the world, you won't make any money without customers who are eager to buy your products.I know this probably sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised by the number of people who think they can just put a website online and the customers will magically appear. Marketing online isn't hard, asa matter of fact, there are very effective free methods you can use to generate a steady stream of customers.I hope this brief overview helped give you a better idea of how to make money online quickly. No matter what type of business you choose, don't forget to take the time to educate yourself on Internet marketing. You need customers to make money and marketing is the way you'll get them!
